Mpox (previously called monkeypox) is a viral illness that can cause a painful rash, fever and swollen lymph nodes. It mostly spreads through close skin-to-skin contact. The current vaccine is a third-generation, non-replicating viral vaccine and is available free in Victoria to people who meet the eligibility criteria published by the Department of Health.
Who is eligible right now
Under current ATAGI advice and the Victorian state-funded program, free mpox vaccination is available to:
- Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (cis and trans), and their sexual partners.
- Sex workers, particularly those whose clients are in the above group.
- Sexual contacts of someone with confirmed mpox in the previous 14 days (post-exposure prophylaxis).
- Laboratory workers who handle orthopoxviruses.
- Some healthcare workers caring for confirmed mpox cases.
Eligibility can be self-declared at the point of vaccination, you do not need a letter, a referral or proof of any kind. Conversations with our immunisers are confidential.
The vaccine schedule
A standard course is two doses, at least 28 days apart. Two doses give the best long-term protection. Many people who received a single dose in 2022–2023 have not yet returned for the second, if that’s you, please book it. Immunity is significantly higher after the second dose.
What to expect
- The injection is subcutaneous (just under the skin), most people find it less sore than an intramuscular shot.
- The most common side effects are mild, local redness, soreness or itching, sometimes fatigue or a headache for a day.
- The 15-minute observation period applies, as it does for any vaccination.
Privacy and discretion
Mpox vaccination is recorded on the Australian Immunisation Register, like every other vaccine. Your record is accessible only to you (via myGov) and to clinicians who legitimately need it. We do not share your record with employers, family members or anyone else. Consultations are private.
How to access
You can book online, walk in, or call (03) 9364 7133 to discuss eligibility quietly before you come in. If you’d prefer a private consultation room rather than the general dispensary area, just say so, we have one and use it often. The same applies to other sensitive consults.
