Public health programs in Australia recognise that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have higher rates of several vaccine-preventable diseases, often presenting at younger ages. The National Immunisation Program funds a number of additional vaccines, or earlier eligibility for the same vaccines, accordingly. Identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander on your record activates these entitlements, you do not need to prove ancestry.
Quick reference
- Influenza, free annually from 6 months of age, every year, every age. Most other Australians become eligible only from 65.
- Pneumococcal, free for ATSI adults from age 50 (most others from age 70).
- Shingles, NIP funding currently from age 50 for ATSI adults (others from 65).
- RSV (older adult), ATAGI advice currently includes ATSI adults from age 60 (others from 75).
- Hepatitis A, free for ATSI children in high-prevalence regions.
- Meningococcal B, additional NIP-funded doses for ATSI infants.
Eligibility is reviewed periodically by ATAGI. Your immuniser will confirm at the consult.
Identifying on AIR
Your immunisation provider can update your AIR record to reflect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander status if it isn’t already recorded, that unlocks the additional entitlements automatically.
